Recently read a verse that described married Indian woman's traditional adornments and how from head to toe they are symbolically linked to her married status. Everything she wears is worn in her husband's name. (cattle carries a stamp of the ranch it belongs to - to display ownership...)
The blessings she receives indirectly pray for her husbands long life, because without him her life is not easy. She is recognized as a lucky person that has a strong support system to protect her from the world. The verse ends in a question to the husband on what symbol of their marriage he is carrying. The question of course is baseless as an Indian man normally doesn't seek the relationship for it's status or success. The symbolism doesn't contribute much to his success or survival, so why would he care?
Majority of Indian women are still not independent. Many still don't think they can survive in this world without a man's help in spite of being financially independent. They have never been trusted with things important for survival. They have never been taught to analyze, question and understand everything around them. They are taught to accept the decision responsible men around them make. Some are lucky to have real responsible men in their lives. But most end up accepting a dependent life for themselves and try to find happiness in it.
We all know men aren't born smarter. They are not as protected as women are and get to explore the world a lot more than women do and in the process develop abilities that make them successful and confident. Only 18 years ago it was hard for my Dad to let me go. A single unmarried woman all by herself in an unknown territory. I also know how long it has taken me to realize and trust my own strengths and abilities. I am happy that I got the opportunity, i trusted myself enough to take it, but wish it had come sooner.
Courage and confidence are the good luck charms that would truly decorate a life, be it a woman or a man.
